Basketball Strength Training and Conditioning with Coach Kenny
Functional Training is the concept of using exercises and drills that mimic the movement and activities performed on the basketball court. It is believed by many experts in the field of sports training that functional training may lead to better muscular balance and joint stability, possibly reducing the number of injuries sustained and improve the individual's performance in sport. The concept is based on the idea training that emphasizes the body’s natural ability to move effectively on the basketball court will be more beneficial to the athlete in the long run. This is not a new idea and is used by various conditioning and training experts in all sports and dates back to ancient Chinese martial arts. One of the problems I see as a basketball coach is basketball players going to the gym and being taught to use weights in a fashion that emulates the workouts of bodybuilders and football players. Basketball players want to their body to be lean, flexible, strong and quick. From years of observation and working as the strength and conditioning coach for Bull Dawg Training, bulkiness can inhibit aerobic capacity and slow down the athlete. Becoming too bulky in the upper body will also change your shooting technique and may reduce overall flexibility.
"The idea behind our training regimen is to make you as strong as possible in a way that makes it work for you as a basketball player."
